He shakes his head, in obvious disagreement, "My whole job and lifestyle is based on testing new things to see if it will work, if I did not believe in that, you'd see me as a boring clerk." He chuckles, and digs in his saddlebag, hoofing over a small bottle, filled with a cloudy, watery substance. "Though alchemy may have beaten you to the punch, yours may have infinite uses, while mine couldn't be used a bunch."

She looked at the bottle, a little disappointed, but sniffed and shook her head, finally looking at him.
"No, yours can't. Besides, it's not going to be easy carrying around tonnes of bottles of water... purify..."
She stopped, staring at him. She was only just now seeing him without his cape, and she was confused. The brand in particular held her attention, though her mind was devoid of theories as to how it got there. She didn't even know what 'Sweet Apple Acres' or 'EQDA' was, let alone why he'd be branded over his cutie mark.

Saline follows her eyes, and sighs, "It was punishment for an accident I had done, and…getting it was unfun." He chuckles softly, "Sweet Apple Acres is a farm of many apple, so I decided to use one for my alchemy to dabble." He chuckles a bit more, "But I had accidentally knocked over a very small filly, who had gotten a very large bruise, and her greater, bigger brother thought it was not silly." He then does the impression of a hoof then cattle-prodding him.

"I didn't even know that was legal," Sugar muttered, frowning, "Branding something other than cattle... I thought that was illegal too now, come to think of it."
She tore her eyes away from the brand, and began speaking again.
"As I was saying though, if I can make a portable purifier that works the same or better than this one, there's a multitude of ponies who could use it, and it would be completely safe. No risks to using it, no ponies to throw 'operational health and safety' in my face about minor niggles in my inventions... Just gratitude, and enough money to live by."

Saline imagines it in use at the Zebra Lands, how the drought season wouldn't force him or his tribe to drink the muddier waters, how he could be able to request clean water so easily, like in Equestria. "Consider sending it overseas, the poorer countries would beg please," he sighs, "But do consider it an act of donation , you may lose profit, but your acts would be cherished with every location."

Sugar frowned and looked away.
"the theory behind that is... gratifying," She began slowly, "But... we all need bits to live. it's a cold hard fact that I can't ignore. Many of... no, most of, my experiments and creations are a failure in everypony else's eyes... or they think they're too dangerous, or too risky to use."
She sniffed. It wasn't often she let her vulnerabilities show, mostly because she was constantly buried in her work.
"Without the bits from my work, I'm left with nothing. I scrounge up enough to survive but... I need a boost, and soon. My account's looking sorry for itself, and my food stores are worse. I'd love to give my creations to the world, sir, but it's... It's a hard thing to ask me to do, simply to give up my living, which I really have very little of left, to give what I have to others."
She nudged the sand with a hoof gently.
"If I could make some money off of my inventions... If everypony stopped saying I was mad, or crazy, maybe I could give a little bit of myself to others, for nothing less than to better their lives, and to make them easier but... It's just... I need to survive myself, if I want to keep helping those in need... You know?"

Saline realizes how ignorant he sounded, how he just assumed every invention brings in the bits.
"I did not realize you were in such dire straits for coin, I realize now hoe terrible I sound…I deserve a kick to my loin." He sighs, and pats her back, "However I will support you and your endeavor for this act, and now…for an act of tact."
A bag hits the ground, with jingling heard.
"That bag contains my free bits, ones left over for my emergency bit kit." He opens it, "130 bits for you to sustain, if you want more, I could shave and donate hair from my mane." He says, with an…actually genuine look on his face, "I have been selfish in my past times, now, I shall be as generous and as often as my rhymes."

"I don't need your charity," She muttered, feeling a bit insulted, "I'm perfectly capable of looking after myself thank you."
She ignored the bit bag unhappily. She was feeling so peaceful before, and now this. Jeez. She supposed the sentiment was sweet, but the undertones were not so much. She knew he meant well. She knew she should say she knew he meant well, but she didn't. She wasn't sure why, but she didn't anyway.
"I'll find some way to make some money," She grumbled, "It's not the first time I've gone without a few luxuries."
'luxuries' was a lie. She'd never had many luxuries. Not really.

Saline waits a bit longer, then slowly takes the bit bag back, feeling hurt from being denied his act of charity. "If you do think so, I guess it won't go." He feels only more embaressed, now feeling like he ruined the whole day for her. It only builds up rapidly in his gut, fhat feeling. He suddenly hops up, tying the cloak back on, and starting to run off, "I'm so sorry, I did not mean for this folly!"

It took Sugar a moment to comprehend his actions, and by then he'd already started running.
"H-hey wait!" She called, distressed, "I... I didn't..."
She sighed and, dejectedly, looked back at her purifier.
"I didn't meant it..."
There was a long pause where she did nothing, then something in her mind just clicked, and she frowned. Tossing the primitive purifier aside, Sugar started drawing in the sand herself. However, unlike Saline, who had made quite a beautiful picture, Sugar wasn't really drawing a picture. Instead, complex equations and symbols began taking shape under her hooves as she began to plan her purifier.
She couldn't let herself sink into depression. Her work would help. It always had before.

Saline runs, holding back small tears in his eyes. He can't believe he ruined ANOTHER pony's day, especially with his happenings at the bar yesterday night. He halts, nearly on the other side of the beach. He turns, looking to see the speck that is Sugar. He feels guilt build up again in his gut, and sighs.
"I...can't just let her sit in her lonesome, but what am I; I'm just a useless zebra waiting to succumb..." He sighs, and starts to walk back, though it'd take him a while...enough for him to sob on the way and not be noticed, mostly.

Sugar had already thrown herself head first into her work, and the sand was slowly being filled up with equations.
However, when she reached the picture of herself and she went to wipe it away, she paused. It was a fantastic picture, considering it was in sand, and it would be a shame to destroy something like this so thoughtlessly...
She drew a circle around it, and continued on, working around the image as she started on the more complex parts of her ideas, moving onto a blueprint (drawn in sand) soon after. Her mind was back on full ball, and tunnel vision dominated her mental views. She had to get this purifier working. And if she couldn't get a purifier, she'd manage something else that did something similar.

Saline trots up to her, seeing as she's very, very busy by the looks of it, he just...watches. He cannot understand much, but can get out basics of it. He doesn't know what to do next, really. He just watched, interested, like an assistant to their master.

Sugar kept right on scribbling, working hard on her math, her calculations and her ideas. She had to get this all down, to see if she had any problems with her theories and calculations.
Blueprints were a valuable asset to any inventor, and incredibly important. Although, drawn in the sand they weren't much good, once she'd written them down, she could remember them intimately. She knew she had to remember them, so she might as well write them down to engrain them in her memory anyway.

Saline has to read over a lot, but he starts to understand it. Barely, though. He notices how quickly she's able to process every equation into the exact pieces needed so easily, unlike alchemy. He had to do many mixtures to get what he needed-of course! It's exactly like her arithmetic!
He sits, now slowly starting to understand it further.
