Sugar frowned. This is where things got hazy. She didn't like the idea of this part. Something she couldn't describe in thamaturgy, or science. Something new, and something she didn't understand.
But she planned to understand it soon enough. So, she took a deep breath, and tried it.
Annoyingly, nothing happened.
Again, this time she took another deep breath, and tried to imagine herself stepping out of her own body, and touching the ley.
... Nothing. This was quickly becoming aggravating. But! Sugar was nothing if not persistent! And she would succeed! Perhaps not today, or tomorrow, but she would succeed! She always did!

Spirit shook her head and rolled her eyes. She knew this was where sugar would start having some difficulties. She was too logical for this. Too.... methodical. And to think, this was the part that a pony couldn't really... well... 'teach,' per se.
This part, reaching out of your own body into Ley was... well... nearly impossible. It took hard training and had absolutely no explanation. It wasn't something you could think about. You just kinda... did it.
And as such, the Witch placed a hoof on the earth pony's shoulder, halting her in her tracks, "you're thinking too hard, Sugar. You need to calm down. Don't force it. Just let your body and spirit flow apart. Like the ebb and pull of the tides."

"Easy for you to say," She grumbled, not realising the insult to her casual dismissal. It was hard for Sugar to stop thinking. It was alien, strange. Her mind had been ticking into overdrive since she'd learned what science was, and figured out you could combine it with magic. It'd been running on that potent mix for almost eight years now, and it was hard to turn off such long lasting and habit forming kinks in one's psyche.
She tried again, trying to stop thinking so much. All it did was force new things into her mind as she stopped thinking about one thing. She forced that away, and something else popped up. It was impossible. With a growl at herself, she tried again, thinking of her incorporeal self as more like a wave, slowly undulating over to where the Rune was.
Still nothing happened.
She took a deep breath, and sighed, trying to calm herself down. She could do this. It couldn't be that hard if somepony a little younger, and less intelligent (Sorry Spirit) could do it, right?

Spirit was less intelligent than Sugar. She held no illusions about the fact. Hell, Spirit only ever went through eight years of schooling, rather than the twelve that was custom. But, that also didn't mean much when it came to things that require next to no thought.
It was... Frustrating, trying to describe and explain how to do these things. How does one /explain/ that they must basically cut ties with their very soul to reach into the Aether? How did r make it sound... Not impossible. Well, maybe with baby steps.
Maybe if she tried to look t it from Sugar's standpoint, "Okay, let's try something else," Spirit said, interrupting the earth horse after another failed attempt, "Let's try this with a more... Scientific and literal approach."
"We live in a three dimensional world. We can interact with other three dimensional things. Magick, though, if you took higher level theory classes you should know, is a fourth dimensional substance. It really has no place in our world. And to be completely honest, it isn't in out world."
"It's within the fourth dimension of our world. And to tap into that, you need to find your own incorporeal self. But, ponies find this differently. Some, like Monks, can meditate. Some, like I, can just delve into it. But, we need to find what makes you calm. Why puts your mind at rest."
"Err.... Did that make sense?"

"Mostly," Sugar said, thinking over the slightly younger Spirit's attempt, "You got a few things wrong though. It's true this is a three dimensional world, and Magic exists in a technically impossible fourth dimension, but it's a fourth dimensional energy, not a substance."
She frowned and thought about that for a moment.
"If you wanted to get into magical theory though, you could say that magic is the sixth true element after light. All ponies, save for you of course, have it within them, it just manifests in different ways, and it's also part of the lifeblood of the world. In a sense, you could argue that Magic is not part of us, as opposed to us being a part of magic, and thus capable of doing theoretically anything the world can, which would also explain the capabilities of the Princesses as well."

Eh. Spirit didn't do too bad for a 'younger and less intelligent' mare, did she? Like, she got most of it right, and got Sugar to correct her, "Fourth Dimensional Energy. Sorry. But, what I'm saying still retains. Maybe I'm the special case with the Ley Lines because of my Deadness in that aspect. Try to focus on yourself. Not the Ley Lines. Try to utilize the magic within you. Grab hold of that passive stuff and... Make it active. Use /it/ to influence the lines."
"Or.. Actually, let's not even think about the lines, yet, first, why not just try to us that Magick, make it flow and more by your will. Then, we'll move on."

"um... okay?" Sugar said uncertainly. As far as she knew, only unicorns had the innate ability to control magic in the physical realm, to bend it to their will. This would be an exercise in futility, Sugar was certain.
But hey, they also said that making a machine to move things was impossible and that water couldn't be purified via any other mean than by magic. So what the Samhain, might as well give it a shot.
"How do I do that?"

The last question seemed to bring a small laugh from Spirit, "You are asking the absolute wrong pony for that. I mean, look at me. Grey. Dead. No magick at all."
"So, I guess we could both try and figure this out, right?" She asked, surprisingly not having her mood dampened by that thing, "I mean, I figured this stuff on my own, I'm sure that with both of us, we could get it in a day or two!"

Sugar thought about that for a long moment. She knew Spirit was incapable of performing traditional magicks. That was all well and good, plus Sugar was as well. Having two different perspectives in something might actually come in handy.
"I would suggest starting with visualisation then," Sugar said confidently, "Visualisation is scientifically proven to assist in aspects of the mind, mental health and the ability of one to make things as they believe they should be. I think it's the best place to start, but it may help if we stand on the glyph, to literally see if what we're doing is making a difference."

"Oh, yes, of course," Spirit claimed, gesturing to the rune on the ground again, ushering Sugar to step onto it, "Lemme just... get it running again."
Spirit remained off the rune, though, even as it started glowing, and bringing one's gaze into the aether again if they stepped atop it. Honestly, Spirit really liked this, though. Despite how frustrating it promised to get, actually working with Sugar on an equal playing field was fairly entertaining. Both trying to figure out the best way to handle it.

The world lit up again, and Sugar sighed, thinking hard. The ability to draw magic to oneself was almost second nature in a unicorn, and would be an aberration should they be incapable. Spirit was already an anomoly, being medically 'dead', so she would have to work just as hard as Sugar, who was an earth pony, would.
This might actually make for a good piece of research.
"Okay, we can see the ley," She admitted, pleased, "Now, if you wouldn't mind showing me how you do it in this place," Sugar looked at Spirit, "And I shall observe, and try to copy it. Evidently it doesn't take magic, or you could not do it as you do. It must take something else."

Spirit had... honestly never checked what it looked like when she drew upon the Ley. It was funny, really. Three years of pulling energy from this stuff, and she didn't even know how she did it! Shaking her head slightly, she closed her eyes and sighed.
Then, they shot back open. Oh yeah, she'd need to actually build a rune, first. Seemed she was getting a wee bit ahead of herself, didn't it? With a light smile on her face, she laid a simple sigil upon the ground.
Then she got to work again. Closing her eyes she reached into the Ley. And a pulse appeared in her chest. It looked like magick, though it also looked fundamentally... different. It seemed almost fuzzier than the stuff around. It beat in tune with her heart, in ebbs and pulses of strength. As if it were a drum, beating a tune to a parade, small pieces or the nearest Ley Line seemed to break off, in a steady rhythm, flowing into the rune, which then burst into flame, as it's Elemental Affiliation would promise it should.

Sugar watched the whole incident very, very carefully. Drawing upon the Ley wasn't something Sugar could read in a book, which meant she had to learn on the field, and Field work was as exciting as it was dangerous. This proved no exception. Whilst Sugar wasn't sure about the whole 'reach out with your inner self' style that Spirit had palmed off to her in explanation of the use of sigils and the magic behind them, This method seemed a bit more believably explained as 'requesting power', or tuning the resonance of your heart, which in and of itself was rumoured to be a magical hub inside the body (See Lovecroft's 'Love and the power it Wields', page 491, chapter 8, paragraph twelve).
Sugar's analysis continued as the magic flowed from Spirit, to her sigil. Redirected, one might say. It was a curious process, and one Sugar wanted to try for herself. Demonstration complete, Sugar drew a sigil of her own.
And as usual, she wasn't going half way.
It was a sigil she'd formulated herself through a rudimen-
"This is a sigil I've formulated myself," She spoke suddenly, still scratching it into the ground carefully, "Using a rudimentary translation I managed to formulate (It's not even close to perfect, please don't ask for it yet) This sigil should, theoretically mind you, temporarily suspend the planet's gravitational pull in this area. Which is to say, it will counter the planet's magnetic pull in a small area around us with an equally powerful magnetic push, which should allow us to float about temporarily so long as we stay within this area. It works under the combination of both water and air. Water is capable of being ionised, and it's ionisation.. You know what? Never mind, I can't even explain this one. I'm just hoping it works."
She finished scratching it into the earth and took a deep breath. This was going to be interesting.
