Summer was Midnight's least favorite season, though tonight he did not mind it as much. It was drawing close to autumn and the evenings were getting cooler to walk around in. He took in a breath of fresh air, picking up on just the faintest, dry scent of fall. Very soon the leaves would turn orange and red and ponies would be decorating their front porches with pumpkins. Autumn was absolutely his favorite season. Not too hot, not too cold, and the occasional stormy weather.
He realized he had started drifting out of focus from his watch, furrowing his brow and looking away from the sky to the streets. It was highly unlikely, but something could have gotten the drop on him. A cockatrice could have wandered into town or a shop was being stollen from. In fact, he thought he caught a glimpse of something moving past a shop just now. Midnight bit his lip before putting his ears back and going to a stalking crouch. Making his way around an alley, his sensitive bat ears picked up hoof steps. Putting his wings out wide to make himself seem bigger and more intimidating, Misnight crept around the corner if the building to see who it was.

It was late, a small cool breeze whisping slowly past her as she gave a faint shiver. Though took it as a sign that summer was leaving -- something she was more than grateful for. Walking quietly among town in the late evening. Again clue hunting as she read a novel that gave her the idea that the oddest places could hold the best clues. But to no luck as she searched for ideas around barrels and odd silly places. Some help that book was! Walking past a closed shop as she turned looking across the way at some haystacks. Digging in it lightly to finding herself just feeling stupid.
Glad that nobody could see her act like a town fool, she already was avoided she didn't need more reasons to give her fellow villagers more reason to. Made bad for buisness, and that most shop keepers tend to avoid crazy ponies. A soft sigh escaping her lips as she walked out down the street, Only to hit herself into something who curled around the corner. Stumbling a bit to end up falling over them face first in the dirt as she gave out a soft cry of pain. Frustration hitting her as she pushed herself up just a little to see who she stumbled over. A almost as small bat pony stuck under her with his wings in a mess.

"Aaagh!" Midnight tumbled back, finding himself pinned and startled. Even when focused something still got the drop on him. Remembering his training, though it had little use now, he opened his eyes and stuck a hoof straight in the air from where he lay in his back. The poor thing was still panting and keeping in mind to watch his breathing. "H-halt! Who goes there?!"
He blinked into the wide, brown eyes of a mare a bit older then himself and felt flushed with embarrassment. It was just some innocent out for a stroll? He had gotten himself worked up over nothing. "Ma'am, do you realize the hour?"

All she could do was just give him the oddest look when he shouted that. The bat pony much more expressive as she was, giving out a loud halt as she just looked at the situation for a moment. Well...she was halted now wasn't she? Staring him down wide eyed as he blinked back. It was just a gaurd, a bat gaurd none the less. Taking note of the flashlight and uniform. She could remember briefly one being hired though personally never meeting them. After all they arrived after the incident, so he was marked on the not guilty list...for now at least.
Debating that choice as she looked to the side for a moment for his question. Trying to remember the time but simply assuming it was late. " Yes. " Giving him a nonchalant look that she was out at this time. Attempting to get up as she avoided hurting anyone any further only to end up tumbling forward into a small roll. At least managing to get off him as she got up dusting herself off just a bit and taking off her hat to dust it off also. " Do gaurds always creep around corners? " Murmuring in a tiny huff as she fixed her hat back atop her head.

Midnight stood with a wobble, fanning his wings to make certain they weren't bent and brushing his fur off of the dust from the street. "They do if they suspect a robbery, Ma'am." He realized he had come off sounding a bit rude, ears going back and looking at her apologetically.
"Not that I am accusing you. A pony wandering around the shops late at night just seemed suspicious, so I was checking it out." He felt a slight stiffness in his right wing when he went to stretch it, cringing quickly and turning his head to see where the cramp was. "Nnngh..."

Robbery? Was there one that happened? Taking a look around it didn't help her case if that was true that she was the only pony out and near a shop. " Did...a Robbery happen? " Looking back at him as he seemed apologetic though she wasn't sure what for. Giving a curious look for a split second that he wasn't accusing her when she could see honestly why he would. At least if she was in his spot she would...though she was quick to accuse.
Trying to think of how to explain what she was doing...no she shouldn't probably tell him that. He'd think she was guilty for sure...and crazy. " I was just...taking a late night walk....I um...Its quiet. " Unsure how to answer as she gazed at the jerk of his right wing. Taking note of the cringe. She shouldn't get involved, just let him go to their gaurd post to get help. But that bit of kindness stuffed deep down in her convinced her otherwise. Looking at the wing carefully, " ....You okay? It looks like we might've landed on it a bit rough..."

Midnight tried flapping it, only to finally give up and tuck it away at a crooked angle so that it was comfortable. "Nah, it's just a little cramped up is all. Partially my fault, most likely, for not staying hydrated enough during the day."
He appreciated her concern and looked up with a smile, the rookie straightening himself out to look professional with a hoof to his chest in a friendly gesture. "I can understand wanting some quiet time. I'm nocturnal, for the most part. If you're finished with your stroll I can escort you home, if you'd like, Miss...um...Flip is it?"
He was always good with names and remembering faces, however they had never met. Though he was teased for it by the higher ranking officers at his station, Midnight took it upon himself to memorize the citizens of his town while doing filing at the office. There were many cop shows and movies, and not a lot of them showed just how much paperwork actually came with the job. To put it in simple terms; there was a lot...

Watching him attempt to flap his wing only made her feel more concerned. Giving him a slight worried expression as he tucked it away. She wasn't even sure how hydration was a issue about a hurt wing. Her worried expression switching back to a odd look as he straightened himself out and offered to take her home. Well she supposed at this point telling him no would raise suspision. Though her own hit skyhigh when he said her name. Givin him a narrowed look as she grew suspicious. " ...Yes...it is...how did you know? " Never rememberin telling him, in fact this was the first she ever saw of him.
Cautiously moving a bit around him towards home as she folded her wings out around her defensivly. " I suppose though...If you really want..." Not wishing to get in trouble with a gaurd as she began to walk off. Heading off towards the outskirts of town. Slow in pace as she still felt nerved from the dark and the odd bat pony who knew her name.

Midnight felt just a little excitement at being given something to do outside of patrolling. What could be more noble then making sure a mare made it back to her house okay? He almost took pride in it, but put a humble head back on his shoulders as he picked up his step to catch up alongside her. "It's a little embarrassing, but I'm kind of new on the job and I sometimes scroll through the files of the locals to memorize names and faces. It comes in handy...or at least I hope it will at some point. Maybe if a stranger were to roll in and rob a shop. I wouldn't recognize them so I can identify them as being from out of town."
He hoped that didn't sound too creepy. Midnight had the realization that for a Pegasus pony it was abnormally dark and he fumbled to get the torch out of his pocket. Biting it with his teeth, he turned it on, temporarily blinding himself before tucking it between his good wing and facing out towards the street. It was a little clumsy, the direction the light was pointing, but it was better then nothing at all. He wasn't a unicorn where they could just flash light from their horns in any direction they wished.

Ugh this dark, she felt blind...like a bat? She wasn't sure she should even think that analogy around a bat pony. Feeling like she offended him without him even knowing it! Hearing someone trot up quickly next to her just to be the guard again. So he really was determined to walk her home? That was a first, she didn't exactly have it good with the guards after the whole...blaming them for Sugar and being incompetent. Ah that was it though...he was new. He didn't know. Finding herself calming her suspicions just a bit as she listened to him.
He was much more vocal than she was, " I see...suppose it does though It might not help there are more and more coming to town as of late....I um...grew up here. " Quietly speaking up as she glanced to the side. She could see what he meant but it was just a TAD creepy...wouldn't it be easier to introduce yourself? She could hear the sound of fumbles, turning her head to watch him attempt to pull out a torch. Fumbling to turn it on as he held it out though at a angle....a bit far from the path. She couldn't help but try not to chuckle, a few of them escaping her lips as she covered her head with her wings to hide herself. It was a soft laugh, but she couldn't help it with how silly it looked for a moment.

"Hate this thing..." Midnight muttered to himself after finally getting the flashlight at an angle where it covered the path. Another reason he never used it. Can't carry it in his hoof and walk at the same time. He caught that she was laughing at him and flushed furiously. The big bad bat was being clumsy and it must have been hilarious. He cleared his throat and straightened out. "Ahem--My apologies. Um, I'm actually from Trottingham. So I sound a bit funny, I guess. Or that's what I'm told." He did have an accent, though not a terribly distracting one. Trottingham's influence was a pauper-esque mimic of Canterlot and consisted of mostly Unicorns, carrying their vowels more prominently. "Anyway, where to, Miss?"

He finally managed to get the light on the path, her chuckles slowing to uncover herself. Straight faced as if she didn't even utter a single giggle. Though she knew if she was in the same spot she'd have trouble holding it too. Being glad he didn't point that out as they continued their walk. Her somewhat leading the way as they headed towards the outskirts of town. Nodding no as he apologized. " I'm sorry I laughed....It was more so the fumbling than your accent. I didn't think your accent sounded odd.." Giving a tiny glance over in his direction before going back to her focus on the path ahead.
" I live on the outskirts of town...in a cabin up the hill...." Keeping a eye out for a faint glow of light that stayed on her porch. She hated not haviing it on when it was dark. Even if it did nothing more than waste oil. The walk a bit silent as she found it awkward, giving a small cough to break the silence as she glanced back to him. " So...why did you come here?...Can't imagine its busy like Trottingham...? "

Oh, well now that was a bit of a touchy subject for him. He wasn't upset, however. Small talk was just what it was, but the real problem lay in wether he wanted to answer her. " I, um...yeah, it's a lot more crowded. I couldn't find a position there as an officer because the academy was full. I had originally been in training to be a palace guard for Princess Luna, but I was sent home for health reasons."
He was clearly uncomfortable, ears pressed down and shuffling a back hoof like it had previously been asleep. He was relieved when they reached her house, finding that the shop was a good change of subject. "Oh it's the Knick Knack shop! I've passed by here a few times. You live upstairs? "
He didn't know why he felt so private about his condition. Perhaps it was that small flicker of pride he had experienced earlier being burnt out at the fact that he couldnt do what he had wanted with his life over a disability. This pony was incredibly sweet, though. She had been a good listener when he, normally, was the pony listening and the other talking. Made him realize just how much he had missed some normal interaction.

It hit her instantly it was something he didn't want to talk about, silently kicking herself for poking where she shouldn't have. She wouldn't have wanted the same done to her and here she was accidently doing it to him. Though she couldn't be sure why as she nodded quietly as he spoke about it. Only as he muttered health reasons she still couldn't see much wrong with him. But it was possibly internal and she wasn't going to poke further than she did. Taking note of his ears as she folded her wings back down to her back.
Finally though she could see that lamp glow, the familiar old glow of her cabin. It wasn't the newest or fanciest place, but it was warm and cozy and all that mattered to her. Nodding to her shop as she could hear a bark from inside. " Yes, Its mine. I closed shop for the day and just wanted to get out...I suppose you can't come inside because of duty so I could thank you with somethin to drink....? " At least feelin a tad bad she made him leave his post to walk her up home when she didn't even want anyone to know she was out. Walking up to the porch as she fluttered up weakly. Blowing out the lamp for the night as she landed back down. Pulling a key from the top of her door as she unlocked it.

Midnight took a silver fob watch from the pocket of his uniform and smiled down at it, listening to it gently tick away. His mother had made this one personally for him with the engraving of his cute mark on the back of it. "Actually, now that you mention it, I have 10 minutes until my lunch break. Er...or rather, what would be considered my lunch break. Another pony from the office takes my shift temporarily in that time...I wouldn't want to impose, though." Realizing that may have sounded too forward, he fumbled with his manors a little before straightening out.
He made a steep bow of the head for her kind offer. "I can understand if you'd want to go right to bed with how late it is."
