Being a stallion who interacted with his customers regularly, Fancy often heard lots of things from them. The best place to catch a show, the juicy gossip, and, in this instance, a great place to load up on sweets. Several of his customers had talked about Cafe au Lait. They had nothing but good things to say about the drinks and food sold there. Now, of there was something Fancy loved almost as much as reading, it was sweets. True, he had been a bit pudgy as a colt because of them, but he had more self control now. He learned to pace himself and eat slower. You ended up filling yourself easier that way and you had less a chance to get sick. So, his store closed for the day, Fancy felt it was a lovely chance to try the cafe he heard so much about.
When Fancy entered the cafe, he found the environment quiet and the amount of ponies there small at the moment. That blessed quiet area combine with the delicious smells in the air made a smile come across Fancy's face. Perhaps he could use this place as a nice place to read? The cafe was comfortable looking and the delicious smells soothed his mind. Plus all the snacks were right there or him to buy and eat as he read! First order of business though was to find out what exactly this place served. Spotting who he assumed was the frequently mentioned Pumpkin Spice behind the front counter, Fancy called out politely. "Excuse me? I've never come to this cafe and I'd love to hear about what all you serve here miss."

Now that the lunch rush was winding down, Pumpkin found herself beginning her afternoon chores to prepare for closing up shop. True, she still had about another hour to kill but it never hurt to start getting things taken care of. The day hadn't been overly busy, but steady enough to keep her hooves from being idle for too long, not that Pumpkin was often idle for very long. She was the type of mare who preferred to keep occupied, there was always more to be done. At the moment, she was laboriously washing out some used mugs leftover from the lunchtime crowd, while the final pot of the day brewed beside her filling the cafe air with the scent of fresh coffee.
The bell on the door chimed and Pumpkin glanced up from her work just in time to be addressed by a pony she'd never seen before. She set down the mug she'd been scrubbing and wiped her hooves on a dish towel before approaching the counter. Pumpkin smiled warmly, appreciating the manner that the stallion displayed, in this business you got a lot of "I need this," or "Give me that," it was pleasant to have a more polite customer. "Well, sir, I can whip up just about any kind of coffee or tea drink you could think of, as well as hot chocolate. As for food, I've got some blueberry muffins that I whipped up this morning as well as some coffee cakes and a few chocolate chip cookies," she motioned to the case of treats beside the counter and added, "Sorry we're a bit cleaned out since its the end of the day."

"Ah, is it that late already? That's a shame, this seemed like a good place to sit and enjoy a treat while reading." As always, Fancy had a book in his saddle bag just ready to be read if he had free time. "Ah, I didn't even introduce myself to you. How rude. My name is Fancy Flights." Fancy lifted his hoof, offering it to Pumpkin in a friendly manner. "I run the bookstore Fancy Prints two blocks over. Its a pleasure to meet you." Thinking on what he wanted, Fancy paused before speaking again. "Well I would love some hot chocolate... oh and I'd love to try your chocolate chip cookies. How about... a pack of eight? I don't mind if they aren't fresh, I don't wanna dump too much work on you at the end of your day after all."

She smiled back, welcoming the friendly interaction especially at the end of a long day. "You're welcome to stay as long as you like, just don't mind me cleaning." It didn't bother Pumpkin when customers lingered a bit after she closed out the register, after all she had plenty of work to do anyway might as well be in the quiet company of the cafe patrons. "Nice to meet you Mr. Flights," she had heard mention of his bookstore, but had never been overly interested in books so she had never stopped in herself. She nodded and turned to retrieve the things he had ordered, humming a bit to herself. "They're pretty fresh, I whipped them up this afternoon between the breakfast and lunch rushes. I'll give you the last dozen for the price of eight, I don't think anypony else will be coming in before closing and I'd hate for them to go to waste."

There was one thing you truly learned when working in any job that pretty much was made of customer service. If you were nice to other ponies, in and out of your job, chances are that you will be treated the same. Fancy pretty much lived with that attitude and he was smiling when Pumpkin spice offered the cookies at a discount plus allowing him to stay a bit. "Thank you Miss Spice, that is very kind of you. I'll take it." Fancy reached into his bag and set a fair amount of bits on her counter. "Will this cover the cost of the sweets and the drink?"

The stallion set an excess of bits on the counter as she retrieved the cookies and hot chocolate and set the whole of his order on the counter in front of him. "That's more than enough," she nodded and counted out how much he owed out of the pile he had set on the counter, sliding the rest back toward him across the counter. The scent of hot chocolate reminded her that it was getting close to her dinner time, she'd have to wait until the chores were done. She smiled, handing the treats across the counter, "I hope you enjoy these."

Fancy smiled and pocketed the change from his purchase, taking a smell of the hot chocolate. "That smells good! From all the good I have heard around my store about your cafe, I bet this is gonna be one of my favorite places to visit." Fancy took the cookies and drink, setting them at a table close by the counter. Out of way of potential customers, yet close enough to talk as she cleaned up. Fancy tried a cookie and closed his eyes in bliss at the delicious taste. Finishing the cookie, he took a sip of the hot chocolate. "Oh wow, you make some delicious stuff here. I'm gonna have to spoil myself on the weekends and read here on the days my store is closed. I can't wait to try what else you have here. Where did you learn to bake like this Miss Spice?"

Pumpkin let a small smile develop as he complimented her work and her cafe. She tried not to be proud, but sometimes it felt good to indulge in the compliments that were earned through her hard work. As the stallion moved to a table, Pumpkin began wiping down the back counter as well as the treat case, careful not to miss any spots as she cleaned. She glanced up at the stallion as he asked her a question, "Hmm? Oh, my grandmother mostly. Mom's side of the family were one of the biggest pumpkin producers this side of Canterlot. Had to do something was all that pumpkin." She chuckled a bit at the remembrance of fields upon fields of the plump orange squash. Most ponies would've been dead sick of the stuff after eating so much of it, but Pumpkin couldn't help but enjoy her namesake fruit, even still.
