She stood there looking at this pony with her mouth wide open. Listening to every word she spoke with great interest as she continued. Even about Starswirl's work, this pony was a pure genius to study up on magical theories even not being a unicorn. It seemed she had a respect of an area of knowledge so she could incorporate it with her own passion. As she spoke of the princesses she tilted her head a bit as she thought a bit "Well Starswirl was a very wise unicorn back in his day though after the years, many more have emerged and came up with other theories. I am sure I could figure out a way to help you with the cooling system, I was reading up on a theory to convert a large spell into a more compact way so it works as a simple spell."
She went over to the pony as she finished up happy to hear that her necklace was easily fixed up "Thank you so much. And remember there are other kingdoms besides Equestria." she began to smile as she moved her head to the side "The kingdom I come from isnt under Celestia or Luna's rule. Nor our neighboring kingdoms." she began to smile a bit before bowing her head some "I am sure with the knowledge you have will figure out a way to do this and become very famous. Your mind alone is so intriguing to me your love for magical theories along with your own passion. Not many ponies I met have your level of passion and should be ashamed."

"But... the idea of compacting a complex spell into simple formula is a bit like trying to force a square box through a round hole," Sugar replied, frowning, "Complex spells are complex for a reason, simplifying them could have any number of unseen effects, and shouldn't (in my opinion) be tampered with to make simpler. It's like taking the theory behind submolecular manipulation and trying to apply it to make an advanced form of telekinesis, it's just silly?"
Gently, the (not quite) mad mare lifted the masterfully crafted pendant up via its chain, tested the hinge and clasp a few times to make sure it really was working and fixed, and with a satisfied nod, gently gave it back. It was around about this time her mind had processed everything Midnight had said, and she spoke again.
"Remember, I'm a thaumo-mechanical engineer, not a weaponsmith. As fascinating as the ideas can be of weapons made of an amalgamation of magic and science can be, I won't lower myself to those standards. There's nothing.. There's no finesse, or skill, about making a bomb. Ammonium, Hydrogen, Anypony can make a bomb, and adding a magical element isn't that difficult to do either."
She looked fondly over at the drill in the corner and smiled. It wasn't actually that big, small enough to fit in a launcher, but it was robust, and she knew it worked.
"But making something that can drill through solid concrete?" She asked rhetorically, "That takes thought, time, testing.. And some heavyset calibrations. Here, look."
She turned around this time, ignoring the drill, and took Midnight over to the shelves marked 'Dangerous' and took down the box, placing it on a spare workbench and searching around for something else.
"During some of my more... interesting experiments," She began, "I tried to make a machine that would cook a meal in a few minutes. A full meal, not just a bit of hay or something. What I came up with included the use of... oh where is it!?"
She rooted around for a few more minutes, growing more and more frustrated, before giving up entirely.
"Whatever, probably best I don't show you. But, this is what I made. It bombards whatever's in it with microwaves, which, I thought at least, would cook the food nicely and throughout. Turns out Microwaves don't cook things though, and it turned a glass of water I was trying to boil into a lovely little vapour bomb. I was missing fur off my coat for weeks."

"Well that is the thing you can indeed simplify it in a safe way. There are ponies even others who work on that I been reading on it and it may be silly but, if it works wouldnt that help?" she said tilting her head a bit "I mean no disrespect but, the talk of this is fascinating to me and I never met many others who share this deep passion. And I would never consider you a weapon smith you have morals unlike some of them." she began to walk with her over to an area...seeing the box pulled down as she looked for something in it "Well the drill could help a lot especially for non magical ponies to go through concrete or rocks out in the world. I can imagine them making new train tunnels or it being used to help fix up areas of a kingdom." she began to sigh she was really getting into this. She had taken her necklace up with her magic and opened it up looking inside it before closing it
"This works like new again thank you again." as she spoke of the microwaves and losing her fur she shook her head "You know what they say...you gotta have a few failures before you perfect something." she began to smile a bit as she was happy about a few things "You fix my necklace and you make amazing things around here why are you still here in this sorta small town? It seems most of the ponies fear you and your passion. It seems to me and forgive me if I sound out of line that you are being restricted by this place...then again it does take bits." she sighed a bit as she began to walk around some "Your items would sell so well in a larger community. I found the little box upstairs adorable and I am sure others would too. All these items are here being shunned but why?"

Sugar's face darkened and she sighed, putting the microwave away.
"... Equestria's still stuck in the dark ages," She finally said after a long pause, "They cling to what they hold dear, and find comfortable. They still hold fast to the idea that they don't need to advance in any other ways than what we already have. Streetlights are still lit with flames almost everywhere save for some larger cities, like Manehatten. Ponies still use candles as light sources when bulbs can now be retrofitted to be carried anywhere as a torch."
She hesitated, rolled her shoulders, and gestured for Midnight to follow her, leading her through the part filled workshop back to the stairs.
"The mining industry is always looking for a way to make their jobs easier," She continued her explanation, "Thus why I built my Quantum Bore Tunnelling Drill, but they're also very particular about operational health and safety, so I have to send it off to a committee first so they can approve it as safe. The problem with that is, nothing is truly safe to use. Ponies hurt themselves on the most mundane of objects, even their eating utensils, because of improper use."
She'd reached the stairs now, and she stopped, turned and sat down, head hanging.
"And... for ponies like me, who only want to look forward, to better understand the possibilities that our race can expand out limitless potential, and to make Equestria a better place with my skills... It's like living in a bubble, where nopony else can possibly understand your intentions, or care about your feelings. Or rather, they're in the bubble, and I'm stuck in reality, and whilst they phase in and out of existence, I'm still here, the only pony in the world trying to move forward in life, to advance us as a species. Sure, I've made mistakes... I'm an inventor, mistakes are what we do. But... I suppose it's just..."
She shrugged. She was starting to feel depressed, and that was never a good thing for poor little Sugar.
"We're a bunch of ostriches," She began, "With our heads stuck in the sand, thinking everything will go away, and it won't. I want to help, but we as a nation are so set in our old traditions, we refuse to embrace change. And that leaves ponies such as myself in a... precarious predicament."

She listened to Sugar as she spoke of equestria being in a dark age still. As she continued she nodded as she had seen what she meant with most of the things. Ponies fearing "Dark" magic as it were. Tarot readings was a sin to most ponies. Sure she grew up most of her life in Neigh Orleans where it was the normal but, a lot of other places saw her as evil. "Miners would love your drill." she followed Sugar back to the stairs as she saw her...she was getting depressed by the way things were here "You need to get out of the place. Sometimes you cant change the views of another cause they are set in their ways. They sit clinging to their old ideas and ways cause it makes them happy. We shouldn't fault them for that, let them embrace what they want and not care just worry about what you think is important."
"Mistakes happen in magic, inventing or anything really. We look back at mistakes to learn from them so dont worry Sugar." she smiled as she sat on the floor looking at her. Seeing her eyes she saw something along the surface. She refused to read her emotions "The kingdom I come from again would love your inventions with mountains near by the drill would help with drilling. The other machines could be put to good use. I shouldn't tell you to go to my kingdom or anything but, you need to go out into the world past equestria and see what other nations believe. You will find a place that you will fit in and your inventions will change so many lives." she smiled a bit before closing her eyes "I see greatness in your future and I dont even need my taort cards to tell me that."

"I don't know my future," Sugar replied stubbornly, "And I won't, until it arrives. Ponies have pretended to tell the future before. I put little stock in pyschics and soothesayers."
She turned, and headed back up the stairs.
"Where could I go?" She asked rhetorically, "The dragons? They see ponies as beneath them, lower lifeforms. Griffons? A warlike, tribal society. Their technology is focused on fishing or weapons, they have no need for my creations. Taurus? The minotaurs are barely out of their infancy, still tribal and nomadic. They, and pardon my rudeness, couldn't tell one end of a drill from another with an instruction manual and a diagram."
They reached the top of the stairs, and she pushed the trap door open again.
"There will always be ponies who are suspicious of my work, and it will always drag me down. I have come to accept that. I just... need to make a machine they cannot deny is useful and safe. Though, knowing my luck, it'll be something silly. As for why my wares don't sell..."
She snorted.
"Superstitious ponies will have you believe I have trapped a spirit within my Useless Machines," She huffed irritably, "To forever to my bidding and be a slave to a switch. because they're idiots, and don't bother to learn about circuitry or programming. A foolish thing indeed."

"I wont try to convince you otherwise I am any better. I know what I can do and have been scary accurate. However those that pretend to do it for bits...for the amusement of leading ponies or others on a path of their life that isnt a real path infuriates me." she began to sigh a bit as she heard about the other things "The kingdom I come from could work. We have creatures of all kinds there living in peace at most times and royal officials that want new ways to benefit their people. Arid one of them...my boss wants a bright future for the kingdom by any means. He has talked the queen into allowing more inventions be involved so it helps the residents." she began to smile before watching her go up and followed up after her
"Trust me if they had spirits in them I would hear them. No...nothing like that in them and you dont seem the type to need to resort to taking a soul to sell an invention. If you ever need a place to try just get in touch with me and I will pull a few strings to get you a little shop to have at the kingdom. If not at least an audience with the royals."

"You make it sound like a utopia," Sugar responded weakly, "Whilst others would say the same of Equestria. No place is perfect, and no nation is universally accepting. It's a fact, an unchangeable law of nature. It doesn't matter how much you try to change it, there's always resistance to new ideas."
She led the duo through the shop, back through the maze of shelves, to the counter. Clean and wooden, it held only a small register that no longer opened, a calculator in case she needed to confirm her math, and a few pencils and paper.

"Every place in the entire world is gonna have turmoil in some way or another. My kingdom is no different but, at least the queen and others in charge take into account what will benefit the people. Inventions you make could do just that at least as well you wouldn't get looked down upon for what you do. You would probably make a lot of coin foals around the city would buy all kinds of things you make I am sure." she thought a bit before smiling "Have a section for them and something for adults..fix a lot of jewelry like my necklace." she went around with her to the counter and began to move use her magic to take her box out of her bag again, placing the necklace back into it before smiling "How much do I owe you?"
"Also I would still like to show you what real tarot is. If you would want to that is. not gonna push it but...you have I am sure had some fake fortune teller tell you "You will be a great so and so...or you will make lots of bits. Or you will find love." I give the flat out truth. If I see something bad in your future you deserve to know not hold onto false hope these fakers give."

"I... I do not mean to insult," Sugar said hesitantly, "But I put very little faith in the words of fortune tellers. The idea that somepony could accurately predict the movement of every atom in the universe, every reaction to the movement of the other atoms, to accurately tell what one pony was going to go through is, I'm afraid, theoretically impossible."
Sugar paused for a moment, then spoke once more.
"And you owe me ten bits," She continued with a bit of hesitancy, "Unless you'd like one of my novelty machines as well?"

"I am not insulted for the way you feel. In truth what tarot is I see the path your life has been on, is on, or will be on. It shines light on paths not yet taken, and shows the path that in the past you could of taken and missed." she smiled a bit as she got her bits out..counting them out she set them out only eight and she looked in her bag and found nothing else in there "I...seem to only have eight." she began to look at her before back at the bits "Can...can I do something to make up for the bits I dont want you to be coming up short for this deal you fixed my prized necklace and I cant let you not be paid in full." she moved her tarot out of her box looked to see if any bits might be in there

There comes a time in all ponies lives where this sort of situation pops up and, to most, it's the perfect situation to get laid. The poor mare, couldn't afford her expenses, looking desperately for another way to pay the pony in question, and is told she can resort to sexual favours to make up for it.
This was one of those times.
But Sugar was not one of those ponies.
Instead, she sighed, burying her face in her hooves, mumbling about next time being paid in advance, before looking up and waving a hoof.
"Don't worry about it. It only took a few minutes, eight will be fine," She said tiredly, "I was probably overcharging you anyway."
This wasn't true. Fiddly objects such as that locket could be repaired at a jewellers for almost double the price Sugar charged, and it generally took longer. But, given her circumstances, Sug couldn't complain about the money. She needed it, just like she needed to eat sometime in the next week.

Bowing her head she began to shake a bit "You are to kind to do this..you will be repaid in full. I give you my word when I hear back from Arid you will get what is coming to you." she said before she looked up into Sugar's eyes, one was a beautiful blue as the other was a brown color. When she buried her face into her hooves she began to take her cards from their wrap "Miss Sugar your kindness deserves such kindness in return. You fixed my beloved necklace, you took eight bits instead of ten." she began to shuffle the deck a bit
"I know you are going through rough times. The harsh words behind your back...you are in need of bits." she began to move her deck out a bit setting it on the counter and fans it out with her hoof "May I have your permission to read you? Let me see your eyes."

A reading would never get her the bits she needed... It just didn't work that way! Then again, she wasn't known for accepting charity either so...
Ugh, what a drag.
Sugar sighed heavily, and looked up again. Maybe Midnight would go soon if she let her do this silly reading thing. Sugar was starting to feel depressed, and wanted to work on something to distract herself from the inane reality her life had become since moving away from home. Not that she didn't appreciate the bit of income the fortune teller had brought her, or the conversation. Far from it. But...
"Go ahead then," She said softly.

"I am sorry I pushed but, I feel there was a reason I came here. My necklace falling out of my box and breaking. In over four years it has never broken or fallen from the box when I removed my tarot cards." she began to look at Sugar as she had agreed, her soul was open for her to read as she smiled softly "Please let me look into your eyes Sugar...and draw a card keep it face down. I have a feeling you want to know about your drill...or there might be something here and now." she said as she tilted her head a bit
