"No," She said quickly, looking away, "The drill... The drill can't be changed now. And knowing if I'll have the bits to pass the winter without holding back money is... secondary really."
She really wasn't sure why she'd opened up to this mare about her life, and her lack of bits. It's not normally something she'd talk about to anypony. She didn't like accepting charity, and she didn't like being given sympathy. It made her feel insulted, like they thought she couldn't look after herself, or something similar. Like she was hopeless, and though she often felt useless, and turned to her machines for comfort, she never wanted anypony else to know her distress. It was hers, and telling would only led to sympathy.
"The drill is... Of no matter," She reiterated simply, "I have other things to fall back on. Must I ask a question?"

"No you do not, with the bits do not worry about that. As I said for your generosity when I return to the kingdom I will return to buy things from you." she smiled warmly before tilting her head at how she was acting. She didn't need to read her emotions to already tell she was terrified about her drill being rejected, to work so hard on her pride and joy...only to be turned down. "Your drill is extremely important to you so, I will not read about that. I dont wish to give you bad news about it if there is." she thought a bit before looking into Sugar's eyes seeing her soul open for her to read into. "You are...alone aren't you?" she began to look deep into Sugar's eyes as her own stayed unblinking
As she stayed she could see so much of this pony's life. There were certain souls she hated to see no not hated the pony for having it..but hated that they were driven to be that way. Stifled, alone, shattered these were ones she saw and wanted to fix them. "When you were a filly you were left alone and even now as you are a mare..you are alone. When I see your soul, it's not grown it's a small filly crying out." she had tears fall from her eyes as she didnt realize she was crying.

Sugar's eyes widened at the questions, and the true words coming out of Midnight's mouth. At first, they seemed surprised, then sad. But soon after they hardened, and her eyes, with a titanic mental effort, flicked away from Midnight's, and her mane fell over them both.
"I'm not a filly anymore," She said softly, "I know what happened, I understand my past. I didn't then, I was too busy trying to solve every problem I was faced with to work on my own, and didn't recognize I had any. I don't need to be reminded of everything, and I certainly do not need your sympathy."
It was all Sugar could do not to choke up mid-word. She had, in times when she'd been too depressed even to work, thought back on her life, and figured out the truth of things, rather than how she'd believed them to be all those years ago, and it stung. It stung her every second she thought about it. But that was it. Those times were over, and she didn't wish to revisit them. She had to make something of herself, make a name for herself. She had to prove to them all she was meant for great things, even if she died trying.
"If all you can do is tell me what was, I'll take my money now, and bid you farewell."
She didn't care for politeness anymore. Midnight had dredged up memories Sugar had thought she'd come to terms with, and forgotten. As it turns out, all she'd done was make up excuses, and put them aside, ready to be thought of on another day. A day that never managed to come around. Until, it seemed, today, and she didn't want to deal with her past today either.

She stood there as she watched how Sugar was reacting to her words. She was upset and rightfully so before she heard her words "I saw your soul, your soul was that of a filly. I...I am sorry but, when you tell me I can do a reading I can see your soul through your eyes." she began to shake her head a bit "It isn't sympathy it's real. A filly was hurt deeply cause of this. Even to this day you are still feeling that hurt." she began to close her eyes before she wiped them "You have not pulled a card for me to do the reading. I will tell you more just please pull a card." she began to move closer to the counter a bit "Please Sugar I dont mean any disrespect if anything I would love to help. Your soul is...alone in a dark void as a filly. Not because you are a filly but, that's when you were hurt the most first."
She kept her cards fanned out for Sugar hoping she would draw one..she saw how her eyes were hidden behind her hair now and began to shake her head "I will leave but, it wont help how you feel. If it is any consolation I would like to consider you a friend of mine."

Sugar was silent, and unmoving for a long moment. Finally however, she sighed, deflated from her previous outburst, and took a card, but kept her head downturned. It was hard for her to turn down a friend, even if she barely knew them. She didn't have many friends.
And she was always told she needed them so...
She put the card face down on the counter, keeping one hoof over it.
"Now what?" She asked passively.

"Let me explain what a reading is really...the short version cause I am sure the fake ones didnt." she began to look at the card picked "Imagine your life as a circle and as you go towards the middle of the circle. Not a straight line it is a lot of paths each circle's path is different for every pony." she began to move her hoof out to the card "You are given paths sometimes some are hidden to you." she smiled a bit "Some paths are happy others lead to sadness, others lead you to the middle faster."
Reaching out she took the card and began to turn it "For this reading I think there is some underline issue you need to face head on." she turned the card over revealing The Fool card. On it was a pony dressed up in a jester outfit with their muzzle tied shut, right next to a cliff dancing on it's edge "The Fool. It seems the cards want to help more then I can. It means you have to strip your walls down and face your fears."

"I know what it means," She muttered. Contrary to Midnight's belief, Sugar's disdain for fortune tellers came not from a bad reading in her childhood, but from all the research she did on the subject herself, trying to find if it was a viable form of magic. She knew the cards, she knew their meanings, but she didn't put stock in it.
"I could have just as easily drawn anything else," She mumbled, "It's just a card. It doesn't want me to do anything."

"I see then shall we try this again?" she said before she fanned the cards back into deck format "The cards want to help, if you were to draw another card it will show that. And to prove that shuffle them then draw the first card." she began to lean over the counter a bit "I promise you Sugar I am not trying to mislead you or cause you more harm. Please let the cards help, you need to hear this even if you think you dont."

Ignoring the offer to shuffle, Sugar simply picks up the deck, places it upon the counter (Despite not agreeing with or holding much regard for them, they weren't hers. Mother always told her to treat other ponies things how she wanted her things treated) and drew the top card anyway, placing it face up on the bench.
And the colour drained from her face.
A hooded, skeletal pony stared back at her, piercing straight into her soul.
She'd drawn the death card. The card of change.
This was not looking good for her astute observations of past tarot readings, nor her studies.

Seeing she drew the death card she began to tilt her head a bit "Sugar, you know what this card means and as I said the cards wanna help." she began to move her hoof up and touched the death card moving it along it gently "You are gonna have a deep change soon. You are gonna have a Psychological change and end a vicious cycle that you are in." she began to smile some "And it will be for the best." she watched Sugar before looking back at the deck "Would you like to draw one more card? Do it however you wish...shuffle it...cut it in half or even flip the entire deck over."

".... This is absurd," Sugar finally exploded, "Tarot cards are just cards! They can't predict the future with any degree of accuracy, it all depends on how a pony reads them, or the luck of the draw!"
She picked the deck up, determined to prove Midnight wrong, and added her own two cards back to the deck, still painstakingly and shakingly aware of the two cards she'd drawn, and catching a glimpse of what she would have drawn afterwards, and shuffled them vigorously. She then picked the top card and flipped it, intent on reading Midnight's fortune.
Only for the Fool to come up again.
Then Death.
She stopped, shaking, and shook her head, mumbling to herself as she shuffled them once more, adding those two cards back to the deck, and repeated her previous actions, with the exact same results. These cards seemed hell bent on giving her these two. With a twitch of the muscle under her eye, she excluded death and the fool from the deck, and once again shuffled and dealt out two cards.
The fool. Death.
Her eyes widened, and she looked at where she'd left the cards, separate from the deck. They weren't there anymore. The passive telekinetic detectors she had around the store (in case of theft, bought from the ESN, Equestrian Security Now) hadn't gone off either, so it couldn't have been Midnight.
"I... I don't understand..." She whimpered, "How..?"

As she watched Sugar take the cards and put them in shuffle and draw them again she just stood there, watching Sugar never taking her eyes from her "The cards hold their own energy in them. The years of me putting my own energy into them. Over the years they become their own entity if you will. Connected to me but, separated." she began to look at Sugar as how she was getting wide eyed from the drawing of the cards
Moving her hoof over to the cards she tapped them "The moment you agree to a reading...to allow me to read your soul. They do as well the moment you draw a card." she began to move her hoof over to the deck tapping it a few times "They want to help. They will do whatever it takes to show you this isnt a hoax."

Sugar looked at Midnight helplessly, then at the cards on the counter, and the deck in her hoof. Shakily, she drew the last card and looked at it, holding it out of sight to the eyes of the (Sugar was forced to admit) powerful fortune teller.
Judgement.
Another powerful signal for change, but not of the destructive kind. A sign of certainty of change, but not one she had to take. According to her research, one could refute the change offered, but would almost certainly regret it.
And Sugar had seen enough.
She put the cards back slowly, keeping Judgement out of sight, and pushed the cards back to Midnight.
"I think," She said slowly, "Our discussion is at an end, Sueño Nocturno."

Standing there she watched Sugar continue with her reading pulling the last card. She didnt even need to look to know what it would be "So what do you think now Sugar?" she smiled a bit before moving her hoof up to the cards as they were pushed back to her. Wrapping them back up she began to place them into the box again
Hearing her say her real name she bowed her head "I am here if you need me Sugar. You need but, say a word I wont push the subject you seem a bit distressed and dont want to add more to it."

"I do not believe in fate," Sugar said tersely, "I believe in hard work and that rewards come to those who do what they can as they can."
She sniffed, holding back her fear of such magic she could not even begin to comprehend. Such magic shouldn't be possible. The future was never set, and could be changed. She had to believe that. There was no way a mere unicorn, no matter how powerful, could look into the future and discern the path one would take in life, and how it would turn out. No way.
She had to believe that.
She had to.
