"Yes well," Sugar said calmly, "Most fear what they don't understand, so it's understandable that a mare such as myself (who covets new technology) and those ponies are often at odds, and the misunderstood take the blame and ridicule of the fearful"
She finished reeling in the drill, and replaced it in its launcher, putting the launcher to one side, and trotted back to the wagon.
"Of course, that doesn't mean I haven't done live tests before," She stated in a matter-of-fact tone, "Many of my experiments are, theoretically, sound, but always seem to fail in some aspect that I've miscalculated in. Some are so dangerous I have to make a much smaller prototype in order to test them without the potentially lethal backlash that could occur if they failed, such as my Molecular Integrator, which I still haven't finished."
She pushed the wagon closer to the hole, and started reaching in again, this time withdrawing pipe pieces one after another, and assembling them to hang down the hole she'd made.
"It's perhaps the most complex thaumo-mechanical creation I've ever imagined, and the theory itself is still in its infancy, though it is sound. My biggest problem comes from a lack of heating system strong enough to keep the components and crystal cool enough to keep it in one piece, otherwise it'll explode. And given that the spell is affecting things on a molecular level, if it goes critical and explodes there's no real way to be one hundred percent accurate concerning the possible consequences of such a powerful magical explosion. It could, for all I know, turn the entire are around it into a molecularly unstable mass of sub-critical material, which can explode if submitted to enough force with a detonation that varies on payload. If it happens en masse, it could destroy entire cities, mountain ranges, almost anything theoretically."

That was fair enough. Spirit actually for once knew what Sugar was talking about. Ponies shunned what they didn't know or understand. That was the same for her. Except, instead of being labeled a mad mare, she got the much more thaumaturgical one of 'Witch.' So, instead of being judged, she was actually more... feared. Made grocery shopping easy. But, that was about it.
When the drill came to the surface, Spirit stepped away from the cord, allowing Sugar to do her thing in putting it back, and returning it to the cart. And /then/ she said what Spirit was hoping to hear. Live tests that fail. That was the stuff she wanted to see. Not through any sort of sadistic means, she just needed to see something go wrong. It wasn't an experiment, be it mechanical or magickal, unless something went wrong.
Hell, it seemed at least twice a week that Spirit screwed up with her runes and summoned something or lit something on fire! Or... encased a tree in silver... Or sunk a two story house halfway into the ground. Or... No. Stop it. Don't think about those times. They were bad times.
But... one of them happened yesterday.
Stop thinking about it, still.
"Have you tried to use Runic Magic to keep the things cool? I mean, if we went into multiple tiered spells, it could probably work. You'd need a pretty good magician to pull that off, though."
"Or you could sell these to the Equestrian Military as matter-deconstruction bombs."

Sugar was, momentarily, thrown back to a similar question she'd been asked a few days back by one Midnight... Something? She couldn't really remember. But she wasn't trying very hard anyway, so whatever. Instead, she giggled and shook her head.
"Runic magicks are a lost art," Sugar assured Spirit with a little smile, "Or I'd have tried it by now. Theoretically, it's an instantaneous cast, and it loses none of its potency in terms of the spell. That said, I'm certain that if it would work, there'd be drawbacks. I didn't look too far into it since there's nopony known who practices Runes anymore..."
She finished assembling the pipes and rested the lip on the soil outside of the hole, trotting back to her wagon with an excited bounce in her step.
"Besides, it's no rush for that one. It'll be finished when it's finished! First, I have something else to test."

Nopony that practiced runes anymore? Why, if Spirit really cared, she'd be offended! Maybe later, she could try out a few things. In fact, her mind was already going through what she could use as as cooling system. Maybe a localized wind rune? Paired with a weaker frost one. She didn't want to actually start throwing and placing ice on the inside, so the most basic 'ice' glyphs were out of the question.
As she thought, she started dragging her hoof through the soil, creating small outlines of glyphes before dragging a hoof through them in a large 'X' when she realized they wouldn't work out.
Maybe now wasn't the time to think about that. So, she instead made herself parallel with the mad mare once more, and tilted her head to the side, "So, what possessed you to decide to create a water purifier in the first place?"

"Just an idea I had," She said evasively, "Ponies always need fresh water, and purifying water with magic takes up a lot of energy, or it can, on a scaled magnitude dependant on the amount of water in question, how heavy it is, and so on and so forth."
She wheeled the wagon into place, and swept off the plain linen cover. Underneath was a large machine that, truthfully, looked nothing like a water purifier, save for the small tap on the front with a lever. It also had several buttons on an interface with plain symbols on them. One was a water droplet, another looked a little like a bowl (that she insisted was meant to be a lake) and another again that just had dots on it. It looked simple enough.
And then, with a press of a concealed button on the wagon, the wagon fell apart, dropping the machine down into place, and allowing Sugar to attach the pipe to the machine.

That was a very noble cause for building this. Unless she planned on monopolizing mechanically, mass purified water. Which, really, Spirit would have to applaud. It would get money, and it would get it fast.
Maybe if Spirit did help out with runic cooling systems, she could get in on some of that....
Oh well, that was for the future. And when she found a set that would work correctly together. Maybe if she set it as an aura instead of a burst.... That could maybe do something.
She began frantically scribbling again, only to stop when the Machine made its full appearance. It was... most certainly something. And for once, Spirit didn't want to touch it. She was almost... afraid of what would happen if she did something wrong.
"So... how does this thing work? Or is it highly technical stuff?"

"It's simple really," Sugar replied, flicking a switch to turn on the machine, "It has a few separate functions, and you don't necessarily need a water source of the typical sense."
"It has three reservoirs," She continued explaining, "One for each different water obtaining method. They each hold fifteen gallons, so it holds forty-five gallons altogether. Each mode can be active at the same time, however recharge times on the machine's processes will have to be increased the more they're used. See, each mode draws water from something different. This button," She pointed to the raindrop, "Is simple. It draws in the rain around the machine in a fifteen meter radius and stores it until it's full. This one," She pointed to the bowl shape, "Is a simple purifier of an impure water source. It draws the water up through the pipe and desalinates it, storing the excess salt in a separate container to be sold or used as required or wanted. And the last one draws in passive moisture from the air around it to store as pure, fresh water."

That was... absolutely fantatsic. It just.... didn't make sense to Spirit. Then again, most mechanical things didn't. Too much thinking and mathematics involved. That tended to be what happened when you stopped going to school after age 14, though. Oh well.
"That sounds... actually horribly confusing. Is it just like a giant vacuum then? A giant, purifying vacuum?" then, to clarify once again, she had to add, "A giant, purifying vacuum that won't explode when you turn it on?"

Sugar paused, considering her question, then shrugged.
"Well, according to my calculations," She said, "And the brand new experimental magicus Core I've put in it (Patent pending by the way, this WILL make me famous~) it should be able to run on it's own for extended periods of time before automatically recharging by, once again, absorbing passive magical radiation that is emitted from the entirety of the world. And, it also has about (At this point) a 47.6894713% chance of not exploding during charging sessions."
She didn't mention that it was already on, and instead pushed the button for drawing water out and purifying it, and pulled a cup seemingly out of nowhere as the machine began to whir, and the pipe rattled.

Spirit, once again, stepped back. She may have went to a laughably small amount of school, but at least she knew that 47% was a really high chance. And given the size of the machine (and also knowing that it had a magickal core) she knew that an explosion would be big. She knew she should run. And yet, she stayed by the Mad Mare's side, as if it would save her if this thing melted down.
When the button was pressed, though, Spirit was given a great idea. It seemed small and stupid, though. She reached into her back and pulled out a small strip of paper. Using this, she tied her mane back into a ponytail. Chances were, Sugar had next to no clue how spell cards worked, or how powerful a shield spell from one could be. Could probably survive such a blast, though they would still be rather bruised afterwards.

..... ....... ........... ...............
No explosion. No detonation? Not even a puff of smoke?
Nope, none of the above. The machine seemed, at this stage, to work perfectly, and the mad Mare was absolutely delighted that such a big machine went off without a hitch. At least, for one function. Excited to test if the desalination had worked, she positioned the cup under the tap, and pushed the little lever down. Sparkly clear water flowed out of the tap and into the cup and, when it was full, Sugar turned the desalination function off, and sipped the water, a frown on her face as she prepared for the worst.

Spirit's breath was bated, and she held two reasons for staying so close to Sugar. One was be able to cover her in a shield should things go sour, and the second being that if things did go sour, Sugar probably knew what to do to fix it. And as such, Spirit remained silent, until the cup of water brought it's way to the mare's lips, "A-and? Did it work?"

The water was clear and sparkly?
Check.
No floating sediment?
Check.
No taste of salt and/or bad things?
Check.
"It appears to have worked..." She said cautiously, looking at the glass of water critically, "So, desalination processes work fine. I can't check rain, but then, that's usually safe to drink anyway. So the only one left to check is if it works upon water molecules within the air around it. This... could be disastrous."
She pressed the lake button again and the machine quietened. Then, she pressed the dotted button, and a whole new type of whirring sounded. One that sounded distinctly like magic.

Could be disastrous? Sounded more like 'prepare to throw a shield in a split second.' Which, thankfully, Spirit was pretty damn good at. Her 'job' had at least netted her some damn good reflexes, along with the scars she had peppering her body.
"So.... how exactly does this part of it work? I mean, I assume this is where your Magic Core comes in? Or does it like... collect condensation or something?"

"Condensation?" Sugar asked, shocked, "No! goodness no! Nothing that hideously primitive!"
Sugar shivered in disgust at the very idea of creating something so primitive.
"No, this function uses magical magnetism to attract water at the molecular level from the air around it. Since air is always flowing, there's always moisture in the air. Obviously different places will take longer to obtain enough water to fill the tank, but it will never stop, until it's full that is. The air could get a little drier within a few feet of the machine, but it won't adversely affect the environment around it... theoretically."
