There were quite a few things that Spirit liked about this town. It was small, it was rather quiet, but most importantly, ponies didn't run away at the sight of her. It was, for lack of a better word, liberating, to be able to show her face in public without fear of retribution or ridicule. Hell, she didnt' even try to cover her scars, anymore! It was strange, at first, but she had grown used to it.
Either way, she still felt like she stuck out of the crowds. Errr... maybe that was becasue there wasn't a crowd here. She was basically the only pony on the road. Save for one other coming up. All she could make out, though, was a bright orange coat. A smile broke out onto her face. There was only one pony coloured like that. She had never met her, yet, but it had been on her to do list.
The resident Mad Mare. Clearly, a Mad Mare and a Witch would have a lot to talk about, right? Hell, maybe the could revolutionize Magitechnology! That would be fantastic.
And probably terrifying.
Mostly terrifying.

Terrifying indeed! For Sugar was today on a mission! A mission of utmost importance! Yes! Today was the day! Today was definitely the day! She was going to test it! And test it she would!
What was she testing, you may ask?
Well, if the covered cart behind her was any indicator, something big! Something extraordinary! Something WONDERFUL!
And all she had to do, was find a place off out of the way (This time, so she wouldn't be questioned on the legitimacy of the usefulness of her designs) and test out this magi-mechanical marvel that was her newest and, in her mind, greatest invention yet!
(I'mma play this out as after the scene with Saline on the coast, but before Middie and I's thread)
She did see somepony on the road, but was far too excited to try and identify them. No, instead, she veered off the road, looking for the perfect place to test her new machine. It was gunna be awesome.
No, don't look at the grease smudges on her face, neck and hooves. Those aren't there. Silly ponies.

Oh? The Mad Mare (whose name she never got, yet) was headed off the road. Where was she going? What was she planning on doing? Clearly, it was something big, flashy, and probably stupid if the size of the covered wagon she was dragging meant anything.
So, what else was Spirit to do other than follow her, hoping to maybe get in on the idiotic hijinx. After all, she wasn't dubbed 'Queen of Horrible Ideas' for nothing! In rather quick motions, she found herself following rather closely behind Sugar, ignoring the obvious smells of grease and oil and other... mechanical stuff.
Funny that Spirit would think to do this, really. Back when she actually had a home in Ponyville, she didn't even own a clock! Technology was never really her strong point. Normally, it ended up disagreeing with her.
Which was why she expedited her pace and brought herself completely even with Sugar. Unsure of exactly what to say, she went for the most basic thing she could.
"Hello! What's in the wagon?"

"A water purifier," Sugar replied smugly.
This wasn't strictly speaking true. it did purify water, but it was oh-so much more. It did so much more than simply purify water. Indeed, it did heaps more! Purifying water was just the beginning!
THIS WAS A REVOLUTIONARY ITEM! IT WOULD CHANGE THE WORLD!
Well, Sugar hoped it would.

"..."
"A water purifier?" She asked after a rather long pause, "Aren't those like.... already a thing? I mean... does it do something else, too? Like flavour it or turn it into juice?"
A water to juice maker would be cool. But, just a purifier seemed a bit... off. Even without the technological advances in the world, unicorns could still... magic it clean.
Maybe she should just cut her losses and go the other way. Maybe this was actually just a giant joke on Sugar's part. Spirit then shrugged, if it was a joke on Sugar's part, she may as well wait along until the punchline.

"Not en masse they're not," Sugar replied smugly, "And it's not just a water purifier~"
They reached level ground a fair distance from the city, and apparently, this was where Sugar decided was the perfect place. She stopped, looked around, and nibbled at the grass curiously. Apparently satisfied, she giggled and left the harness for her wagon, and walked around the bag, reaching in to grab something.
"Most purifiers are still archaic!" Sugar called back, "A cup at a time, or done by unicorn magic that takes lots of effort and energy. Mine is neither."

The Mad Mare apparently didn't mind Spirit being around. Which was very, very good. Otherwise, Spirit would be forced to watch from afar, and that wasn't nearly as fun. Granted, watching water get purified didn't sound too fun, either, but still...
"So this is a fully mechanical, expedited, mass water purifier? I guess that sounds rather interesting. Though, if it catches on, you're gonna put a lot of unicorns at the water purification plants out of a job."
As she spoke, Spirit looked left and right. This was a testing zone? Not even near any water? Unless she was going to... dig a well, or something. But... that would take ages!

Many would consider boring a hole to find water a time consuming job, one that would take hours or days to perform.
But when Sugar backed out of the wagon, she came with her Quantum Bore Tunnelling Drill completely loaded in the rocket launcher from whence she fired it, and a bright shine to her eyes. She knew this worked, and now she was gunna use it.
"I'd stand back!" She said, ignoring Spirit's comment concerning ponies losing jobs, "I'm gunna drill a bore!"
and, relocating to the flattest part she could find, she aimed straight down at the ground, and flicked a switch. the drill began to spin, several other parts of it rotating as well. At peak RPM, the drill would make a high pitched whine and a 'ding', letting Sugar know firing was now an option. She eagerly awaited that moment.

Spirit was actually rather excited to see exactly what the Mad Mare planned on doing to get to the wat - OH SHIT!
Spirit backpedaled at an incredible pace when Sugar brought out the Rocket Drill Cannon Thing MK. V. That probably wasn't it's name, but Spirit did not care right now. Instead, she felt the need to get away from wherever that thing was pointed and fast.
The only real sad thing was that given her distrust of most things rocket propelled, she had come to the conclusion that the safest place was actually near to Sugar. Standing behind her and shaking, she loudly asked, "What the hell are you doing with this?!"

"Digging!" She yelled happily just as the tone chimed and, with an almost maniacal laugh, she pulled the trigger.
With a whine of a jet engine, the drill shoomed out of the launcher and plunged into the earth, digging into a hole that just seemed to keep on going! A titanium cord lead from the launcher to the drill itself, Sugar's answer to getting the drill back

Spirit had been dethroned. It hurt to admit it, but she knew, now. No longer was she the Queen of Bad Ideas. No. It was the Mad Mare of town. Spirit would never think to put jet engines on a drill. Or to shoot it out of a launcher at the ground. There was just.... too much that could go wrong.
"W-What?!" She cried out, her hooves grabbing and tightening on Sugar's shoulders, "W-Wha- How? How the hell did you manage this?!"

"Lots of planning, experimentation," She said, now cocking her head to one side to listen, "And a whole lot of bits..."
The sound of the drill boring through stones, earth and other minerals suddenly ceased and the sound of water was, faintly, heard as the Drill hit the water level and Sugar smiled brightly, flicking another switch on the launcher. Abruptly, the whine of the drill's jet engine stopped, and so did the drill sound. She put the launcher down, she started dragging the drill back up.
"It took a while, and lots of planning, but I managed to find a stable enough metal that can withstand forces from both sides. The friction from whatever it's drilling on one end, and the mach 3 speeds of an engine on the other."

Spirit was not the sharpest light in the crayon shed. So, needless to say, she really had next to no clue how fast mach 3 speeds were. But, it did sound pretty damn fast.
And it also looked pretty damn heavy. So, she took a spot behind Sugar again, and began assissting her in pulling up the massive hunk of whatever substance Sugar made the drill out of.
"Don't take this the wrong way, but how are you still even alive? I mean, experimenting with things that can do this? Either you know exactly what you're doing, or you're really lucky."

"I'm very good at what I do," She replied, a little offended, "I check, double check and triple check that the device will work safely in theory first, then practice it in a controlled environment. Like out here."
She didn't mention that the drill in question actually dug through a house, and through the concrete slab that served as its base. Best not mention that.

Fun fact. Spirit was actually there for the massive property damage of that party. Granted, she actually used the panic it brought as cover to do something else, she was still there. She didn't quite know what it was, but there was a good chance that it would come to her soon enough.
"Ahh. Sorry, then. I just kind of... assumed from what I've heard around town." she claimed looking up and away from the back of Sugar's head, "After hearing you called a Mad Mare, I just kind of figured you did constant live tests."
