Primitive? Well, that hurt. Spirit could name quite a few times she utilized condensation as her primary water source on longer quests. Yeah. Oh well.
Regardless, she gripped Sugar's shoulder and dragged her back a few steps, "if it's only theory maybe we shouldnt be so close... yes?"

"Stop worrying so much," Sugar replied irritably, brushing Spirit's hoof off of her shoulder, "My calculations were perfect!"
THat said, the whirring coming from the machine was reaching alarming levels.
"Although.." She said slowly, "This was just a prototype..."

Heavy whirring. Prototypes. Yeah, this was not good sounding. Which meant that Spirit was just going to cut out the middle-stallion named 'waiting.'
The paper tying her mane back seemed to burst into molecules of light, which fell around the pair in a vaguely spherical shape. Steams of light connected the small particles, until a solid bubble of greenish-yellow light surrounded the pair.
"I... dont' like the noises that thing is making..."

as interesting as the shield was, Sugar was more interested in her machine. The high pitched whirring suddenly settled down, and settled into a dull whine. Sugar frowned.
"Did it stop working?" She asked curiously.
Narrowing her eyes, she trotted over to it, emptied the water that was in the cup onto the ground, and pushed the glass under the tap and pushed the switch.
There was a pause before a trickle of water came out, then it began to flow. Sugar smiled.
"See?" She said with a smile, "It's fine!"
Then she took a sip, and her eyes widened and she spat it out quickly and whined painfully, putting a hoof to her mouth painfully.

Okay, so no explosions. that was good. Granted it probably also made her look like an idiot. But, better safe than sorry... right? Oh well. She let the shield drop and followed rather closely to Sugar.
"Well? Did it work?" she asked, before witnessing Sugar's reaction. At first, she assumed it just tasted bad, but then the actual sound played over again in her mind, and she recognized... pain?
"Holy hell, are you alright?" she asked, stepping forward again and placing a hoof around Sugar's neck.

"Ith' ho'!" She whimpered, dropping the glass with a dull thud, "I' brnd mah tongue!"
She forced back tears in her eyes, and took a mental note. Find a way to rapidly cool the water as it was put together.
"Need t' cool it," She said seriously, "Whi' s'in thank."

"Well, I could probably be of assistance there," Spirit claimed, "Earlier, you said that nopony practiced glyphs and runes anymore."
With a small smile, Spirit pulled out another spell card, adorned with a few glyphic symbols, "I guess that makes me nopony."

Sugar paused, mid whine, and stares at the glyphs in fascination.
Actual glyphs. Actual real, honest to goodness glyphs. Real glyph magic.
This stuff wasn't even meant to be practiced anymore.
"Do thothe work?" She asked, eyes glittering in avid fascination.

"Do those work? What you talking about, 'do those work'?" Spirit asked, incredulously. Cracking her neck and a few other joints, she pointed herself away from any civilization or anything important.
Tossing the paper in the air, it started to flutter to the ground before being stopped in midair. It began to shake and the runes atop it surface began glowing yellow. Light from these runes fired into the ground (obliterating the card in the process).
From where thing hit the ground, a small sand pit began to form, slowly swirling outward and growing. Before it could get to Spirit, Sugar, or the machine, however, Spirit flicked a hoof away from them, and the sand pit rapidly extended towards nothing, traveling a ways before stopping.
With that done, Spirit turned back to her acquaintance, "There's a reason they call me a Witch. And that's why."

Sugar watched in vapid attention, purifier momentarily forgotten, as her brain turned to face this new possibility. Runic language and glyphs did still exist, and they were practiced by this one mare, possibly in all of existence only she knew them. This could prove both useful, and a problem.
Did runes require a unicorn to cast them? Did these glyphs need a magic capable equine to create them before they could be used? Could they be made to be reused? Could they be made to be reused multiple times? Or for several years (in theory) in terms of a rough one use per day? Could this be the answer to her cooling problem? Could it be the answer to her Molecular reintegrator's cooling problem?
So many questions! So many possibilities! Instant campfires! Instant walls! Shock spells to be used by non-unicorn guards to catch criminals! Hell, she was sure she could probably even pull off permanent teleportation glyphs if she really tried, with some research. There could be real money here, and real potential to help and advance Equestria magically.

If asked, Spirit could have answered ever single one of those questions. And if Sugar brought it up, Spirit would gladly talk her ear off on it. Especially about teleportation runes. She really needed a scientist's touch with that. He had actually coined the correct glyphs and sigils for it, after all, but not without completely breaking down something to an atomic level and rebuilding it. Only problem was, things weren't always put together correctly. She still had nightmares about that bunny.
Maybe if her Glyphic Vocabulary was better, she could do something, as well. But, being self taught (and going with trial and error), she never had the best success. With a chuckle, he clapped her forehooves together, with a sharp crack, "Helloooo. Earth to whatsyername. You in there still?"
"Did I break another one already?"

Sugar jumped, startled, at her clap and blinked rapidly for a moment before looking shrewdly at Spirit.
"How good are you with those?" She asked carefully, not wanting to offend her new potential resources that she might be able to obtain from Spirit, "And what're their limits?"

Spirit couldn't help but laugh at the face that Sugar gave her. Granted, she must have been really out of it to miss her loving chosen nickname. Good ol' whatsyername. Usually never failed.
When she gained control of her voice, again, she smiled, "I'm about as good as I can be. I could probably push a few limits here and there, but that's about it. I mean... you think I had a teacher for this stuff? I'm still figuring out how it works."
"Granted, i could probably make you a really stable, kickass cooling system."

"Cooling is good," Sugar said vaguely, "But I was more wondering about the limits of these glyphs. Do they need recharging? Can a non-unicorn make them? is it possible for a non-unicorn to use them? What's their range? All these things could provide a myriad of uses, and they could bring in a lot of money..."
She seated herself before Spirit and said enticingly, "Bits I'm more than willing to split with you, should it prove fruitful."

"Well, no. Runes don't need recharging at all. Once they're set, they can work indefinitely until the actual runic base is destroyed. Spell seals, which you just saw me use, can only be utilized once before being destroyed, though. Something about the sheer force of magick it has to go through. But, it's rather helpful when you don't have time to create something."
"Oh, and yes, anyone can make and utilize runes. I mean, to be completely fair, I am literally the least magickal pony you will ever meet. It just takes some effort for those without 'active' magick like unicorns. You need to learn to tap into the actual magick of the world."
"it takes time, but if you really want, you could probably get it."
